Sukhoi Pavel Osipovich (10.07.1895 - 15.09.1975) - Soviet aircraft constructor, Doctor of Technical Sciences (1940), twice Hero of Socialist Labor
(1957, 1965).
Born in Glubokoye village near Vitebsk. After graduation from the Moscow Technical Univercity (MTBU stands for Moscow Technical Aircraft Univercity) in 1925, spent 14 years at the
Tupolev Design Bureau and at Plant №156 (engineer-constructor, shifts
manager, Deputy Chief Designer). During this period he created Soviet fighters like I-4, I-14, and record aircrafts like ANT-25, ANT-37bis
(DB-2) "Rodina". Took part in competitive development of an airplane «Ivanov»,
finished creation of the strike multi-purpose airplane BB-1 (codename ANT-51) used in the first years of Great
Patriotic war (WWII).
On 29 July 1939 Pavel Sukhoi was appointed a Chief Designer
of the 135 arcraft factory in Kharkov, with a task to set up mass production of
the BB-1 (Su-2) bomber. Simultaneously, Sukhoi design bureau got its official
juridical registration. During the period from 1940 till 1949 he was a Chief Designer
at several aircraft factorys in Moscow and its outscirts. Working at the 289
factory, the design team developed the Su-6 and Su-8 armored
attack aircrafts, and built two prototypes of the I-155 fighter (Su-1 and Su-3) for
operations at high speeds and altitudes. For developing the Su-6 Sukhoi was awarded with the 1-st class State Premium in 1943. In 1944 started the development of the
jet aircraft. The fighter Su-7 was equipped with the rocket accelerator that could be switched on and off during the flight. In 1946, the first
Su-9 took off with two RD-10 powerplants and later its modification the Su-11 with Lyulka
TR-1 - first russian jet engines.
By the end of 1940s, the Su-15 and Su-17 were completed. Sukhoi counted on them as the most sophisticated aircrafts at this time that were to reach the speed of sound (Mach 1). Sukhoi also equipped the Su-17
- russian first supersonic aircraft with world first ejectable cockpit.
In 1948-49 the Government made decision to cut funding for development of military aviation. Sukhoi design bureau was closed in November, 1949.
Pavel Sukhoi became a Deputy Chief Designer at Tupolev. Hi directs the tests of Tu-14.
However after Stalins death, on 14 May 1953, his design bureau was restored as OKB-1 (Experimental Design Bureau-1). In February 1954,
its was renamed into OKB-51. In September 1953 was reported two projects of the new swept-wing and
triangle-wing supersonic aircraft for speed of 1800+ km/h. Sukhoi was awarded with the «Lenin» order in 1955 and became the
General Designer of Aviation Equipment. In spring of 1956 Su-7 with AL-7F engine piloted by V.N.Makhalin achieved 2070 km/h.
Experimental aircrafts like the T-431 and T-405 (Su-9) set several world records. Development Su-9 became fighter-interceptor
Su-11 Fishpot. After Khrushchev closing of the project Mach 3 T-37 (T-3M) with turbojet R-15B, new fighter-interceptor T-58
(Su-15 Flagon) was necessary to create under a kind of modernization Su-11.
On the experimental bomber T-4 ("100"; "Sotka")
designed for speed on Mach 3, for the first time in the USSR the titanium and a high-strength stainless steel were
widely used, and also the electroremote control system of an airplane is applied.
The version was developed "Sotka" with a variable-sweep wing - T-4M,
and in 1970 ОКБ Sukhoi has come out the winner of competition of
initial concepts of long-range supersonic strike reconnaissance aircraft, having offered the
project "200" (T-4MS). But to a series has gone
Tu-160 BlackJack...
Such serial aircrafts like fighter-bombers Su-7B Fitter and
Su-17, front-line bomber Su-24 Fencer and attack Su-25 Frogfoot brought great honor to Soviet aircraft building industry.
Development of worlds famous fighter Su-27 Flanker started under management of P.I.Sukhoi.
He was a senator of Supreme Soviet of the USSR 1958-1974.
Awarded with Lenin Premium (1968), State Premium (1943, 1975).
Awarded with Tupolevs Gold Medal(1975), 3 Lenin Orders, Order of October Revolution, Red Banner Order,
Orders of Red Star, Honor Mark, medals.
IVANOV Evgeniy Aleckseevich (13.02.1911 - 10.7.1983) - The Soviet aircraft designer. A deputy of General designer OKB of name of P.O.Sukhoi. The general designer with 1977 on 1983.
In many respects due to his "penetrative" abilities airplanes Su-7B, Su-9 and Su-15 were introduced into the inventory.
In May of 1977 flight tests of the first copies of fighter T-10-1 have begun. But after comparison of
its characteristics and the main competitor - F-15A, in a design of an airplane and the engine was changes which list totaled 20 points are brought. April, 20 1981 the new fighter - T-10-7 (T-10S) in which from the old machine there were only trunks of wheels of primary struts a landing gear and an ejection seat K-36 has taken off. With 1982 it was mass-produced as
Su-27 Flanker.
Since 1981 be ordered activities on creation of supersonic bomber T-60S.
SIMONOV Michael Petrovich (b. 19.10.1929) - Soviet constructor. After graduation from Kazan Aviation Institute (Univercity) in 1954, became a professor of the university and managed experimental laboratory. In 1959 he created Sport Aviation Design Bureau and was main manager and pilots-instructor at the same time. The Design Bureau developed and built several gliders including KAI-6 which was the first USSR's glider made of metal, KAI-11, KAI-12, KAI-14, KAI-17, KAI-19 and etc. In the 1969-1976 he became the chief designer
at the MAPO aicraft industry plants. Later, he was the first deputy of General designer
of the Sukhoi DB. In the 1979-1983 first Vice Minister of aviation industry in the USSR. From the 1983 -
General Designer of the Sukhoi Design Bureau. He participated in creation of the
Su-24 and Su-25. At the beginning of 80s air superiority fighter Su-27 was
designed, it became the basis for the Su-27UB, Su-30, Su-33, Su-27IB (Su-32),
Su-35, Su-37, Su-30Mk, Su-27KUB (Su-33UB). The Su-27 has set up 41 world records.
Simonov also highly supported the creation of youth aviation school just by the Sukhoi Design
Bureau. Along with the fulfillment of defense orders in 1983-1999 the design
bureau created a family of single- and twin-seat sports aircraft Su-26, Su-29,
Su-31 and their modifications widely using composite materials. On these
aircraft the pilots of the combined team of the country won more than 180 medals
in the international competitions, including 80 gold medals.
Besides development of Su-27 line the Sukhoi Design Bureau developed of new aircraft. On September 25, 1997 the
S-37 Berkut first took-off from the Zhukovsky without any financial support from the Defense Ministry of Russia.
There are projects easy single-engine - trainer-combat aircraft S-54, a fighter S-55 and deck S-56.
The accumulated experience of military aircraft design became
the basis for the development of civil projects - S-21, S-51,
S-80, S-86, S-90, KR-860. Projects of superairbus KR-860 are studied, capable to
transport almost 1000 passengers and a supersonic airplane of a business class S-21. The S-80GP capable of transporting people and cargo is expected to take-off in
spring of 2001.
National congressman of USSR in 1989, Lenin Premium (1976). Awarded with Red Banner order.
